Website Design Is Dead

I've got my cards punched out.
How do I get them loaded so my webpage will work?

I can't find a cardslot on my computer.......

I'm not as old as Al. I was fortunate to do my programming with an audio cassette recorder (still pre TRS-80 though).

The best themes I found have been the StudioPress designs. Great templates, awesome coding. They update the coding automatically, so no having to scour the web looking for someone to update the coding on your theme.
They have great forums for support, a lot of ideas!

I'll agree with StudioPress. You also want to avoid themes that are too involved or themes you think are "pretty" yet not functional.

If you want a site for seniors, you don't want 10px white shadow text on a blue background. Or, what I've seen a lot of with some of these themes is gray text on on off-white background that makes it hard to read. Then you have to get into the code.

Don't skimp. If you can do a lot of the stuff yourself, you're in good shape. If not (like me)...spend a few bucks and do it right.

Here I was thinking you were some kind of Big Time computer geek! :err:

I think this thread calls for "GET OUT OF THE WEBSITE DESIGN BUSINESS NOW!!!!!!" :skeptical:

My advice to old school web designers is start learning how to develop Wordpress themes. I was on the phone with an agent last week - an extra $300 if he wanted "5 more pages."

I'm a bit lost. Physically adding 5 pages is 5 clicks. Formatting the text the agent provides is possibly 15 to 30 minutes. Extra $300? $50 more for a contact form? That's a WP plugin.

Not me! I trust the experts for that stuff. You need a true expert and not a wannabe when it comes to your own website. I have been blessed to be able to work with the same person for years. Affordable and knowledgeable .

And I think that would be a great name for a thread. Maybe we should have a new separate section for all the things to get out of!!! That would be a bit controversial!

We're talking about a web presence. We're not talking about a dedicated SEO campaign.

For some odd reason, everyone seems to think agents want to get involved in SEO. They don't. Most agents I speak with merely want a web presence and already have methods to gain business. Others have very old outdated websites with a thriving business. They want a more current site - doesn't have the slightest care in the world about SEO. That doesn't mean their home page's meta should say "home."

Overpaying for a website by giving an agent "fantastic SEO" when that agent doesn't want "fantastic SEO" involves not listening to your client.

SEO services are being rammed down agent's throats. It's a way to justify grossly overpriced websites. That's fine....is you happen to remotely care about SEO.

Bottom line...When you're dealing with your business....Listen to those that can do...and did. How did they do it? Who did they use?
Experience counts. I know. Like most people here, I knew nothing about SEO or web design. Heck, I still don't know much.

But I knew who to call and who to listen to.

Now...Ob...Let's get that thread going!

I actually have seven sites. Val made five of them and did a fantastic job.
One site was a Norvax site that Jeremy (Forum member) took care of. And then finally, I bought a domain that had a working website on it already and I believe Val took care of the technical stuff.

Re SEO...I do that myself and have done 99% of it myself (after websites were created). But I have learned so much from Val, Dave, Alston, Jeremy and others on the Forum. Also, many websites like SEL (which I believe you have referenced), Warrior Forum and other sites offer a great tip every month.

My way isn't right for everyone. For me it has worked out. If I'm new and can't spare $500, then as you pointed out, there are many affordable options.
