Website Design Is Dead

I respectfully disagree. I paid $13500 to a web designer. Initial quote was $9000 but i went over budget. Website generated $20,000 in first 30 days. You get what you pay for in life, sometimes.

Clearly you were ripped off ;)

I was being fantastically sarcastic. If the guy spent $13,500 and made $20,000 from it in 30 days, that's a great deal.

Imagine the deal if he'd have spent $3,000 and made $20,000. I know a few agents very well who generate leads from their sites. I know an agency that generates so many from their site that they give 'em out for free to their subagents. That one agency in particular spent $800.

No way a $3k website would have performed the way a $13.5k website did. Sometimes spending "too much" for something is a *much* better deal. What if he had only spent $3k to make $2k, that's something that happens a lot. Plenty of agents make cheap websites that actually hurt their credibility.

Josh, you live in a very small world. I know quite a few agents generating more leads than they can handle with "blog" sites that cost zero. We have agents on this board who generate their own leads - and a lot of them with spending next to nothing on their sites (as a comparison of this guy who got totally suckered with $13,500.)

Let's not advocate that there's any correlation between what you spend on a site and leads generated. There's not.

You can advocate whatever you'd like and I'll do the same.

If they guy made $20k off his site, it's more than a little blog site. I get that you are figuring out wordpress and you like it and I can also appreciate that you don't like to see agents getting ripped off, but without seeing what that $13,500 site looked like, I think you're playing fast and loose with the facts. If that guy gave someone $13.5k and made $20k in the first 30 days the site was up, everybody won. At that kind of a price, it's a lot more complex of a site than what I think you're giving it credit for. Now if he shows us all the site and we find out it was a poorly executed wordpress theme, then that's a different story, but he seems more savvy than that.

Let's not forget, you started this thread and titled it "Website Design Is Dead". I doubt if that will ever be true.

From my original post:

"Before I get blasted too hard, there's always going to be web design when what you're looking for is very unique and requires a lot of customization."

First, whatever you put in your original post, you entitled the thread "Website Design Is Dead".

Next, web design is always going to exist even if what you're looking for isn't something very unique or that requires much customization. Not everyone has the time, inclination, or skills to invest in learning web design and doing it correctly. I don't understand why you would say otherwise.

If you were to have even entitled the thread "Traditional Website Design Is Dead" that would have still been off base, but at least more accurate. Now you're claiming that a guy that made $6.5k off a website within 30 days and still has the website got "suckered".
