Website Help

I don't know a thing about SEO, but you didn't mention that in your post anyway. If you want a simple, professional site, I used GoDaddy.com's "website tonight" product, added in my own content, and clicked publish. Even someone as tech stupid as myself figured it out on a Saturday. It may be worth your time to check it out.

You've done the one thing that is absolutely essential to success. You've gotten started.

Incremental Greatness
Forget about being perfect the first time. In fact expecting to ever be perfect will drive you crazy and can be a barrier to even the smallest success. Improve your site step by step through trial and error and expect to achieve greatness incrementally.

I think that the criticism in the above posts is accurate, but that shouldn't get you down. My first website attempt was revolting and confusing. I've moved up to ugly but user friendly. More importantly, my ugly sites make money. But it took a couple of years of trial and error to learn how to make a site profitable.

The great thing about do-it yourself web design is that you can redo it over and over again very cheaply.

Regarding Flash:
Flash can't be read well by the search engines. Google might be able to read some if it, but it is a recent development and Google doesn't do it well or consistently yet. Don't hold your breath waiting on the day Google indexes text in Flash files well.

However, there is nothing wrong with using Flash on a page. It just can't be the entire page. The Flash on the page you go to after you click the "skip" link is about the right size. Just surround it with text. The Flash file won't keep the surrounding text from getting indexed.

Assume that anything in the Flash file or any graphic file will not be read by a search engine, and therefore will not help your rankings.

Text is your friend. Flash and other graphics are like a nice tie. It might draw your attention, but it's what you have to say that is going to make the sale.

Copy Design Elements. I'm not color blind, but I'm color stupid. I found that the only way that I could de-uglify my sites was to do what I'm recommending to you:
  • Find a website that you like.
  • Copy the color combination just the color combination.
  • Take note of the graphics and create, buy or find public domain graphics that are similar.
  • Copy the layout.
  • Don't steal the text, but you may want to copy the style of writing and the way they highlight or emphasize text.
You don't have to be able to play an instrument to be able to appreciate a good song. Look at other sites and take note of what you like and dislike from different sites, but do most of your "stealing" from one site, so that you have a consistent, compatible look to it.

You have some work to do, but you've already done more than most people by getting started.

Good luck
