What is the Best Way to Get Started?

Hi all,

I am a licensed agent, and looking to get into FE, med. supp., annuities, ltc. What is the best route to take - go with an agency and give up some comm. $ in exhange for their leads & admin support.

or, buy the leads, my E&O insurance, and just go for it?

Need some guidance here... trying not to make the wrong decision. Thanks!
:err:

Find Todd King on here and call him, great guy. You in Northern VA?

How much money can you put into a lead drop?

If you can lose $2000-$3000 (probably more like $4000) without pain, the Equita or Securus route is a good choice.

If you know what mailers pull the best and can tie up $6000 to $9000, drop your own mail and contract directly to the carrier or to an IMO.

If you can't afford to invest the money required, don't enter the business. Or, consider going door-to-door or cold-calling for final expense or Medicare Supplements.

Contact Frank Statsny if interested in MedSupps. Reference this thread (Survey For DOOR TO DOOR!) for an excellent review of cold-canvassing for final expense.

Best of luck,
Dave

I don't know about Securus, but one sure doesn't have to invest that kind of money to get going with EFES. Less than $500 will get an agent going with EFES.

And as others have advised, Todd King would be a good starting place as well.

I'm about 20 miles from F'burg, closer in to DC.

Not originally from Virginia -- am a transplant. LOL

Couple of more questions...

Does everyone here take a laptop with them on appointments?

Are there many females in this field?

Any problems going into people's homes?

Thanks so much for your comments & info!

I figured you for Philly. I do not tkae a laptop into homes. As for females, it does seem that most of the FE agents are males, but the females that stick around seem to do very well. Within my management's group at EFES there are 3 females that are very good producers. One was the top producing agnet for 2011 for RNA and she was also the number one in persistancy for RNA. She is not on the lead program and does not get leads anywhere else. She is strictly a doorknocker on Chicago's southside and does all business from cold doorknocking and referrals. She doesn't just write RNA. She is also qualified for Figi with Foresters.

GEEZ :1wink: how did you know Phillly? Good guess.

What is RNA and Figi.....??

I'm licensed, but don't know all the terms & lingo yet for FE

With that being said, I would be concerned if my girlfriend or sister got into this business. Maybe I'm just over-protective, but some of these areas are real dumps and are flat out dangerous at night. Consider bringing some mace or pepper spray with you. In my state you can practically carry an uzi around without a license.

My sister actually has talked with me about getting into insurance and I am steering her towards med supps. But as long as you are confident and not worried about being in the ghettos, I say go for it. I'm sure once you're in the home, woman probably do better than guys. It's why I have a female appointment setter.

I'm a UK basketball junkie. The Philly wasn't a guess, you got the other Wildcats at Nova.

RNA is Royal Neighbors of America and Figi is an island somehwere that is the reward trip for Foresters. What I was saying was that this lady did enouhg business to be the number agent with RNA for 2011, not the number one RNA agent through EFES, the number one producer for RNA as a whole and was also RNA's number one agent as far as persistancy.

In addition to that she wrote enough business with Foresters to qualify for their reward trip. This while buying no leads?? Unheard of.
