One thing I have been doing for a while is looking up competitor's sites that rank highly in serps, through Alexa, then checking the sites that it detects as linking in. If nothing else it can give you some good ideas of where to get links from.

In my opinion yes. You should give some thought to what categories you use and what anchor text to use and how to word your description.

BTW you have listed them in order of importance. Yahoo! will probably have the most impact on your site.
