Actually, Allen - many insurers don't generate a policy number until the first premium is paid. In addition, if a policy # IS generated prior to payment, it may take 48-72 hours or more. Most carriers don't have an issue looking a client up using DOB/Name/SSN for payment purposes.
I am of the opinion that payment needs to be made ASAP upon policy approval. Regardless of whether a policy # is available.
Just got an e-mail from a client who can't get through by phone to pay the premium and the website login asks for her policy number. So, she will wait for the "welcome" letter.
But you're right PQ, there are companies where resources are in place for focusing on collecting payment ASAP. Congrats if your preferred carrier(s) are in that bunch!
EDIT TO ADD: It just occurred to me that Health Sherpa likely obtains a TON of enrollments for their "house account". That's why they're pushing so hard with the "Make a Payment" e-mails this Open Enrollment. I don't think they were a licensed insurance agency last year...just a WBE. (???)
