Monumental DM Program..

if it came across that sales in general were not increasing, that was not my intention. specifically, sales generated from that program ...

I did a 1,000 piece mailer last year... no sales. I do take some responsibility for choosing a middle to higher income area, which I probably should have not done! Funny, Monumental recommends that you just show up at the house with the card. I did it and this guy got pissed and said "nevermind, I not interested anymore."

Lower income areas may work better they say and you need to do at least a 2,000 piece mailer. I have not been willing to do this at this time, but leaner times may change my mind!! It is a good price but the time it takes to mail and get the leads back just is not favorable to my market plan!! I hope this helps.

Have you ever tried telemarketed leads? Turnaround time is 2-4 days and the cost per lead is lower as well compared to DM. We get a discount on them at $24 a lead in most states. In South Florida, I believe there's a $5 surcharge.

The direct mail plan you tested failed because of your list.

I worked an area in my town where the average income is high. I did multiple drops with two different lead pieces -- one through EFES and one through Securus.

I got response on average from people who had the income or the forethought to have already set up their burial directly or through pre-need programs. Or they already had accumulated enough assets to not have a need for FE insurance.

In my experience, the income filter is not all-inclusive. You'll have curious people who send back the card who may make a low retirement income, but who have a large pool of assets (pensions, IRAs, real estate) that would easily fund a burial.

That's why the most important element to any direct mail campaign is the list. And to pick the right list, you have to understand who your target market is.

My suggestion is to mail lower-income (not projects) to lower-middle income areas, namely working class communities and rural areas. These areas on balance will have returns consisting of better prospects.

On a telemarketed lead from your company - what is the average closing rate? If I pay $30 per lead, what type of ROI can I look for?
