There has been a lot of discussion about door knocking and canvassing in the past couple of weeks. One question is what do you do where there is no one home? Leave a card or a brochure? I have been thinking about having some door hangers printed. (EL&C has some they have designed). The front has an attention grabber about a product along with the agent's name and contact info. But what I have in mind is a little different because on the back side I want to have it printed as a business reply card.. You could have the Business Reply postage printed on it or require the prospect to supply the stamp. Opinions?

The front would have to have a spot for them to put their contact info too. It could be a great tool. Oxford has door hangers I like. Front says "WHO WILL PAY FOR YOUR FUNERAL? Don't leave loved ones with the burden of paying for your final expenses...Call Today for FREE information on a LOW cost solution." Has a picture of a casket. Glossy.

Added pic of it below. Changing the call today to a fill out and return for FREE info blah blah would work I bet.

A little more direct than I had in mind but it certainly grabs your attention. Your contact info on the front and printed as a Business Reply Card on the back.. Certainly better than cards or brochures left in the door to be blown away or to fall to the ground when the homeowner opens the door and is then irritated over having to pick it up.

Just as a frame of reference, I put out doorhangers for 6 years for indie health. Return (leads) was half of 1% and I ordered in batches of 10,000 for $300. You can break down the per-lead cost from there.

That was 50 returns for $300.00. That is $6 per lead, better than direct mail until you add your distribution cost. Did you hire someone to distribute them or did you spend you time doing it?

I really was thinking of distributing en masse but simply having something to leave on the doors that I knocked where there was no answer.

His idea is knocking first and only leaving the door hanger when no one answers as the time was already spent. The other difference being I bet your hanger had a phone number I bet a hanger with a BRM attached would pull more though I bet responses would be less for life over health.

I mostly put them out myself - got about 200 a day out. I would do it early in the morning so it didn't affect my regular working hours.

If you hire someone, technology is on your side. Google door to door tracking software.

Door knocking and doing door hangers are two different beasts.

If they are not home, they are not home. Why leave something??

Now you are walking upto a door, with what looks like a flier/junk mail. Prospects that are in, are going to tell you "well just leave that with me and I'll get back to you".

In the 10 years I've been door knocking I've left nothing........except for conditional receipts!

First, the only way anyone can gauge "their" ROI on any marketing activity is to just do it.

That said, I have received feedback for several life agents over the years who put out hangers. All of them stated the return was next to zero.

But did they have postage paid reply cards with them. I think that is the key. Would someone who replies to a FE mailing delivered by the mailman not if it was at his door instead. Maybe the best leave behind is exactly what is mailed. In an envelope just like what is mailed from a mail house only with no address or maybe a hand written address. Who knows.
