Did some door knocking yesterday... and then ate some bacon

What's wrong with our pancreas??

Yours might still be fine. However, the reason type 2 diabetes has become epidemic is that most of us eat a diet high in processed cars and added sugars, which creates high levels of glucose in the blood, which is fatal. So the body manufactures insulin in the Beta cells of the pancreas to gather that glucose up and send into cells to be burned as energy. The cells only need so much energy at any given time, however, so they stop responding to insulin's signal to let the glucose into the cell. The body thus makes even more insulin in an attempt to clear the blood of toxic levels of sugar. Eventually the beta cells burn out and die, and we lose our ability to make insulin at all. This is the track from pre-diabetes to insulin dependent type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Joseph Kraft, who wrote a book entitled The Diabetes Epidemic and You argues that there is no such thing as pre-diabetes. If you are pre-diabetic by the medical industry's definition, Dr. Kraft says then you do have diabetes. However, at the pre-diabetic stage you can actually reverse the disease through diet alone.

How about cornbread. You have to put an egg in it.

What about brown rice?

Corn bread is probably not a good idea for the pre-diabetic nor for the diabetic. Cornbread is one of my favorites, and when I cheat, I often do so with a nice piece of warm buttered corn bread. I wish I could be stronger and set a better example for y'all, but I'm an addict. And a weak one at that.

My understanding is that any whole grain, e.g. brown rice is better than the processed grain, e.g. white rice, as the fiber helps to slow down digestion and thus the release of glucose into the blood stream. I can't eat any rice without a blood sugar spike equal to what I get from a bowl of ice cream.

When I am eating well, my fasting blood glucose is around 80 to 89 mg/dl in the morning. When I am eating well, my blood glucose rarely goes above 100 mg/dl, and if it does, it almost always stays under 105 mg/dl. When I am eating well, if I eat a bowl of white rice or a bowl of ice cream, my blood glucose goes to 250 to 300 mg/dl, and it stays there for hours.

My 13 year old son, by way of contrast, has an average fasting blood glucose level of 83 mg/dl, and after he eats rice for dinner and a bowl of ice cream for dessert will not see his blood glucose rise above 105 mg/dl. That is the difference between an unhealthy insulin resistance adult with damaged pancreas and a healthy child, who, if he does not become a sugar addict and eats a primarily whole foods diet will maintain that blood profile for life. If instead he takes the path in adulthood that I took, he will gain weight and struggle to lose it and risk diabetes and all the health problems that come with it.

Sugar is toxic when in elevated levels in the blood. This is why our FE clients have diabetic neuropathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic amputations, retinopathy and diabetic blindness, CHF, stroke, and dementia (many researchers are now referring to Alzheimer's as Type 3 diabetes).

So how do you check if your pancreas is past the point of no return?

I don't take any meds, but I can't eat something high in carbs/sugar in the morning or my blood sugar will spike. I'll get irritable and light headed. Gotta eat some sugar stat.

That can't be good..

Seems like I read that you have to stick your fanger up your butt...no wait that's to check your prostrate. Hey, they both start with a "p".

This is my fifth day on the bacon diet. I've had a few beers here or there, about an avocado and a half and six bananas otherwise I've stuck to it pretty religiously I'm down 4 1/2 pounds, but will weigh myself in the morning. The key I found to this to keep my energy up is drinking tons of water, bacon is very dry so I'm constantly thirsty.

I've been eating a pound or more of bacon a day. I've only lost a pound, but I've cheated. The first night I had a cheese burger and fries. Yesterday I had cheese and crackers, cashews and blueberries. Tonight I finished off some leftover hamburger and beans (I added bacon to it) and a piece of buttered bread. LOL. Time to get serious, if I hadn't cheated I would've lost several more pounds.

You're thirsty because bacon's so salty. I've been guzzling water too. I've replaced 4-5 bottles of pop a day with that much water. Drinking water's good for you, especially when you're trying to lose weight, because it fills your stomach up.

Good job. Think about how much you'd lose if you cut out the beer and bananas.

I didn't want to waste the bananas, and no way on cutting out beer completely, but I am drinking less. I have low sodium bacon.
