New Door-to-Door Flyer Campaign

My first job in the insurance business, I was with NASE, (we don,t have to get into a discussion nase, right?) Anyway, the used tack up signs saying "At last, health insurance for the self employed" Those signs worked, and worked well. Mailers worked as well. We tied the same message on billboards, and on restaurant place mats. They were dismal failures.
About a year or so ago, I started seeing signs for insurance for diabetics, but they only lasted for a few months in this area.
In most places, the signs are illegal unless they are staked in the ground. We had a way around it that was fairly effective.

No the signs said, Finally - Affordable Health Insurance For The Self-Employed! I have one in my office. haha

I was thankful to live in an area that enforced the "no sign" rule. A county official would call the number, play stupid to get all the person's contact info, then they'd get a letter stating that the signs come down or pay a per-sign fine of $250. No a lot of signs in our area. They came down pretty fast.

This is how you get around it: First of all, signs go up on Thursday or Friday. That gives you the weekend. They are hung high with an impact stapler secured to a pole so they cannot be ripped down without getting on a ladder.
You need 2 phones. 1 with an 800 number. This is the one that is on the sign. It is never answered. The message states that you have called the office of ..... Please leave your name, phone number, city and state that you are calling from, and a local representative will return your call.
When the cops call, you call them back, tell them that the home office arranges for the signs to be put up, and on Monday you will get a list of locations and get them down. You will also let the office know not to put any more signs up in that town.

That works.....once. But the second time they go up in then the fines come.

There are 565 municipalities in my state. Most of them have their own police department. It would take a long time to go through them. Those signs afforded me a damned good living for a couple of years, (until nase decided to pull out of some of the n.e. states.)

Mega got contacted by the DOI in my state over the signs just when I started to work with them in 2003. We had a big meeting and the division leader said no more pole signs were allowed since it was an insurance violation.

The issue at hand is they were "NASE" signs - and the DOI determined that it was an illegal solicitation for insurance because "insurance" must be identified on the ad.

Mega tried to combat it by saying that NASE membership doesn't require that the person buy an insurance policy - to which the DOI requested stats on how many NASE reps only sell the membership without selling some type of insurance. Then Mega caved.

Too funny...then Mega signs went up; "self-employed insurance" but we had another meeting stating that since pole signs were illegal that also makes that kind of marketing a DOI violation - so those came down.
