Starting With Securus

1. Depends on your definition of "with"... I stopped their lead program about a month ago. I still put some business through them. I'm just not sure that type of lead system is best for me. I've been sending out some mailers on my own and am about to get started w/ med supps as well. Who knows, I may go back to their leads if my new plan tanks.

I really only have a few rural towns withing 120 miles of me and Securus didn't want to drop mail in Phoenix. This meant that I had to spend some time in hotels on the road which I'm not a big fan of. It also makes it tougher to be relentless with the leads. (Getting a yes or no from everybody)

2. I always got the amount of leads I was promised.

3. I never got paid by Securus, I get paid by the insurance companies. In that regard, yes I'm still selling insurance and enjoy it. Don't get caught up in what other people are making. It will have absolutely no bearing on what you make.

4. Since I started full time around Nov/Dec of last year I've lost about 10% of the policies I've written. (I actually just wrote and app this morning and had the lady call me a few minutes ago and cancel it. Her son who apparently knows everything about insurance had her cancel. Gotta love it...)

Hope this helps, let me know if I need to clarify anything...

Thanks Ben! Yes, this does help, but the more info I read the more unsure I am. You seemed pretty happy with Securus and you haven't really said anything bad about them, but nonetheless you quit their lead program and are trying your own thing.

Obviously, Securus and/or Equita work great for a lot of people. It seems like a large number of agents on here may have started with them or worked for one of them at sometime, but it seems like the majority of agents eventually move on and try to go independent or somewhere else. The people who stick with them the longest seem to need help subsidizing their lead cost, because of poor return mail response in their area.

I am completely new and I know I need training, but most of that can be found in videos, audios, PowerPoint's, forums, phone calls... I still think I need to spend a couple of days in the field with a pro, but should I give up 25% ongoing commission for this when I have been able to find most of what I need for free or for a small fee? I think the answer is no... but what about the leads??? It all seems to boil down to this, someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't claim to know anything. I am listening.

How can I get a consistent flow of leads without breaking the bank? How can I find out the rate of response to insurance mailers in my area? Is the only way to find this out by trying to do my own mailings and cross my fingers? By the way I'm about 30 minutes north of San Diego. How have your mailers been going so far Ben?

For everyone: Are telemarketing leads just as good as the mailers as far as rate of response and closing sales? Is there a quality telemarketer option that someone can recommend in my area? How about a quality mailer option for my area?
Sorry I'm afraid I am starting to sound like this dude :goofy:, but the forum has been invaluable and I know with your help I will find the right fit. Thanks Again Everyone!

I can't speak for Securus, but you are correct. many, many agents move on from EFES and Securus and also from every other IMO out there. 90% of agents that get into this business fail. Those are industry numbers, not mine.

I do know that there has not been an FE agent that couldn't make it work with EFES that moved on to someshere else and then became successful at FE. There may be issues over contract levels and lead costs, but, if an agent cannot make it at EFES, they are just not cut out for FE.

That's not saying that agents have not moved on from EFES and had great success, they have. But, those agents were successful at EFES. They left for greener pastures and better deals. Case in point is Tim W. He was wildly succesful at EFES. He is the same at Securus. It wouldn't have mattered if he had gone to Sr Life or, even, Parker and Asses from EFES, he would still be a success.

Any IMO out there is going to have more failures than success stories. That is this business. Very few make it and even fewer make it long term.

I don't know how many agents get into this business every year. Thousands and thousands I'm sure. So, even at a 10% success rate that's a lot of agents that do make it.

It's really on you which group you end up being part of, the 90% or the 10%.

- I didn't say anything bad about them because I don't really have anything bad to say. They got me the leads I requested.

- I stopped their lead program b/c as I mentioned, I was having to work in spread out towns up to 180 miles away from home. I don't like spending the whole week in a hotel and that is what would have been neccesary to really work the leads.

Look at a map of Arizona, it isn't like the Mid-West/South where there is another town every few miles. Outside of Phoenix and Tucson, there are literally stretches of desert for hundreds of miles. Here's an example of the problems I faced...

I got 2 weeks worth of leads in Sierra Vista, AZ until we ran out of data to mail to. Next the leads would go to Yuma, AZ. These cities are 200 miles apart. It makes it tough to keep working the Sierra Vista leads when I've moved on to another city so far away.

This has led me to try a different strategy. As I said, I may go back w/ Securus at some point. I don't see the problem w/ trying out something else. It's not like we're married.

- My response has been about .09% on mailers so far. That is the standard $255 card. I just sent out a mailer the other day that is my own and I'm hoping to get more qualified prospects.

- Frank is getting me set up w/ the med supps which I look forward to working on. I probably left 5-10 sales on the table by not having them in my bag over the last 4-5 months.

- I also am in the process of contracting w/ Brad to write Vantis. If I had that opportunity that probably would have been another 5-10 sales. (At a low commission of course)

- In addition, I have started work on a website in my spare time that I hope to draw leads through at some point.

Does this help?

Yes. It helps tremendously. Thanks Again.

I didn't mean it to come off like you should say something bad about them, but the extra detail (it's not really bad) makes it clear why you would want to try some alternate lead generation methods. I definitely think trying out multiple lead generation techniques makes a lot of sense for a lot of people. I plan to try more than just one method myself, but I'm just a noob.

Heard about Vantis today actually and sounds like a good one to have in the bag.

If anyone want's to recommend a decent place for some telemarketing leads or a good company to use for mailers, I'm all ears.

I truly can't thank everyone enough for the time they've taken to provide all of this insight. It is invaluable to me and I truly am grateful.

I say just go buy some telemarketed leads and work them. I believe you will make more money working good leads than spending hours trying to find them. Plus working the phones is a pain in the arce. Spend $400 on 25 leads and go sell 7 to ten of them and then do it again.
