Door Knockers

These days with so many crazy people out there, many people are afraid to open their doors to strangers. They won't even answer their phones unless they know who's calling. Door knocking has to be done when you see people outside these days. I like door knocking, but I can't see it being the number one source for marketing.
40+ years ago, when I started there were people making the same argument as an excuse not to do it. Those arguments were not factual nor are they now. Canvassing still works. I admit there are some areas I would not canvas but I wouldn't work appointments in those areas either.

Almost all prospecting doesn't work most of the time.

I realized a while ago that it's human nature to grossly simplify and paint with a broad brush in general (I hate salesmen, especially the ones that come to my door) versus what they actually do when it comes down to the individual event occurring (Wow, I'm so glad you stopped by -- I really have worried about paying for burial insurance for a long time -- thank YOU for helping me).

Even if you don't set an appointment cold calling in person, 99% will not be rude to you. Most in fact will be pleasant.

The key is to "Always Be Prospecting In Large Numbers," whether you're cold calling in person, over the phone, or using direct mail.

If you knock on 200 doors a week, targeting 55-80 year olds, leading with final expense insurance, how can you not trip over 2 or 3 deals a week, if not more?

My first 13 yrs in da biz I spent door knocking chasing dat biz. Now a lot of dat biz is chasing me. I do cold calling via direct mail instead of door to door. If agent have a client base of 500+ clients. That base should keep an agent busy. Referrals alone should net u 100+ apps a yr

da and dat? I have to believe you are better educated than that.

my doctor told me I'd go blind so I stopped when I got cataracts. had my left eye done last Thursday. I can't believe how much better I can see.

I am going to start up again just so I can get my left eye done.

First of all, I love knockers. The bigger the better.

I spent 8 years struggling in residential real estate sales where referrals are key. Since I had none I spent a lot of my time doorknocking. You'll meet the occasional person who is irritated and gives you the wave off and others who'll smile and take your flyer. But I DID get listings off it!

One great story I can tell was of a receptionist I had back in Chicago when I worked in insurance there. Wonderful older women who couldn't stand being door knocked by Jehovah's Witnesses. Well, one day she let them in and BINGO! Converted. Wild, right???

Ya just never know!

What would be more effective, cold door knocking a neighborhood or getting a list and driving around?

BTW, door knocking sucks when its 109 degrees! If anyone has a phone script to share, please do.
