Rough Neighborhood

yuk no thx. But I can see how it'd work well, especially when/if they answer the life insurance question. Do you knock more with leads or cold?
When I was buying leads regularly, I mainly knocked the lead and the neighboring houses. Then 2 or 3 times a week I would go straight canvassing down a street for an hour or so in the early evening. At that time I would guess it was about 50/50 leads vs cold. I rarely buy leads anymore. I get most of my business from my book and referrals. But I sometimes get orphan leads from a couple of my primary carriers, and I keep some aged leads in my car that I'll work when I've got time. These days I just cold knock the doors around whoever I'm there to see. In a way, I guess I'm still running 50/50 because as long as I'm not late to an appointment, I'm always going to try to knock on at least one extra door while I'm there.

Door knocking lead cards is not nearly as fun,and it's actually a lot more work with all the driving.

I was thinking about this today. I was door knocking leads that are far more rural than I usually work ... lots of windshield time despite using the route planner. Only got to 10 doors over nine hours - six no answers, porched twice, and twice got in and sold both of those. I kept wondering how I'd make out in the same amount of time if I were just cold knocking in the city, or even cold knocking a list in the city.

I like working rural areas. When I started in the business I worked a rural debit, and loved it. But it was hard to make enough money. Like you said, too much driving! When I switched to more populated areas, sales were easier to come by, but persistency was a much bigger problem. Still, I make better money working in the city, so I just plan for the higher level of service required to keep the business on the books.

I am no expert here... but I believe that the best rout for a normal run of the mill agent (nothing superstar... that's why it works for me) is to use a mixture of tactics. Lead cards get you out and about... follow-up with meeting neighbors. Using the names of those you've seen and those you've sold in smaller towns is a skill that can lead to very positive results.

Skin the cat from both ends... just be sure the cat does not belong to one of your clients. ;)

Is it possible to work some of the other drives (where you don't have lead cards) using some variant of shonceman's generic neighborhood shonceman approach? Does that work for life insurance in the modern day and age?

Guy I used to work with did not bother skinning them. He was upset enough with his neighbor lady's cats that he just killed them and put them in his trash anytime he had a chance (ie when they were on his side of the fence).

If you work it... you wouldn't believe how it can work... in certain neighborhoods.

The more money someone has, usually the harder the sale if it is door to door... unless you have clients who have name recognition and you use it properly.

When you do Door knocking you better have your approach down so you would say it in your sleep... however; you also need to make sure your not too smooth... laid back and sort-a matter of fact... smile, be kind... know the neighbors they don't...
